Say goodbye to “X Æ A-12.” as Grimes and Elon Musk certainly chose a memorable name for their son, but the unusual moniker has already undergone some changes.
In the comments of one of her Instagram posts, Grimes was asked whether she had been forced to change her baby’s name due to California law. The musician replied in the comments, “X Æ A-Xii.” Later, Grimes clarified, “Roman numerals. Looks better, tbh.”
TMZ called the baby’s original name “illegal” in California, but it seems that “X Æ A-12” simply isn’t valid. As attorney David Glass told People, “In California, you can only use the ’26 characters’ of the English language ing your baby name.” Glass continued, “Thus, you can’t have numbers, Roman numerals, accents, umlauts, or other symbols or emojis. Although an apostrophe, for a name like ‘O’Connor,’ is acceptable.” So, technically, Grimes’ son has the same name, it’s just styled differently.
Grimes previously revealed the meaning behind her son’s name. The singer tweeted:
X Æ A-Xii is Grimes’ first child, and Musk’s sixth.
