Selena Gomez’s iconic 2015 song “Same Old Love” was almost Rihanna’s—and audio released today showcases what the song would’ve sounded like had RiRi taken it for her album. The demo surfaced on YouTube this afternoon and PopCrave featured the audio on its site. You can listen to it below for now, anyway.
Here’s Gomez’s official version, for reference.
“Same Old Love” was written by Mikkel Storleer Eriksen, Benny Blanco, Ross Golan, Charli XCX, and Tor Erik Hermansen. Charli XCX wrote about Rihanna’s history with the track and how it ended up on Gomez’s album on Tumblr in 2016.”
[I] wrote the song with StarGate and Benny Blanco and Ross Golan at the beginning of 2015,” Charli XCX wrote, via Genius. “I think at one point Rihanna was gonna sing it or something, but then I think the direction of her record changed and it wasn’t right for her anymore (anti is one of my fav albums of the year btw slay). Then I think Selena heard it and was into it, and she sang it, and it just suited her voice and her story so well.
The song felt so emotional and real coming from her. I was really happy she cut it; it felt very powerful.””Same Old Love,” from Gomez’s album Revival, became a track many fans associated with her on-off romance with Justin Bieber. When Revival came out, Gomez and Bieber were off. They would date again at the end of 2017 until spring 2018. Months later, Bieber started dating Hailey Baldwin again. The couple got engaged in July 2018 and married in September 2018.
